The honest truth
Why Most Private Candidates Struggle — And How to Beat the Odds

Based on our years of teaching experience, we’ve noticed that over 50% of private candidates don’t improve their grades on the second attempt. Not because they lack ability — but because they lack structure. They study alone, without weekly lessons, without structured notes, without mock exams, and without anyone checking their progress. They’re essentially doing what they did in JC — minus the school.

The students who do improve? They typically have one thing in common: external structure and a community. A weekly rhythm. A tutor who knows the syllabus and the marking scheme. Practice papers with real feedback. And crucially — other people around them who are working towards the same goal.

That’s exactly what Higher Nucleus provides. You join regular JC2 classes — same tutor, same materials, same pace — with the added advantage of having done this before. You already know the content. Now you need the structure, strategy, and accountability to execute on exam day.

From a private candidate
What Private Candidates Say
He is the best private tutor I have ever had. He has these printed collated notes and practice papers that summarises the chapters so efficiently. For each chapter he is able to tell me what to expect – question types, pitfalls and examples of good/bad answers.
Before I began the lessons, I had scored a C for my A Levels and felt completely lost. With his detailed, structured and incredibly patient guidance, I gradually rebuilt my foundation. He showed me how to approach questions strategically and answer with precision. Ultimately, I entered the economics exam confidently and scored an A.
Mr Chia is a very dedicated and patient teacher who helped me gain more confidence in Math. Whenever I have questions to clarify, I can always approach him for help. Furthermore, Mr Chia plans his lessons and materials in a way that better prepares his students for upcoming examinations. Also, the centre is a very conducive environment for students to learn in.

Many past private candidates have told us this structure was the single biggest factor in their improvement.

Yes. You already have prior exposure — that’s an advantage over JC students seeing the content for the first time. Our structured notes help you rebuild quickly, and your tutor can identify specific gaps during the free trial. The earlier you start, the more time you have for revision and practice papers.

Based on our teaching experience, over 50% of private candidates don’t improve when studying alone. But those who join structured weekly tuition with regular practice, feedback, and a peer community have significantly better outcomes. Higher Nucleus has successfully helped past private candidates gain admission to their desired university courses.
