O-Level Tuition in Singapore: The Complete Guide for 2027 and the SEC

O-Level tuition helps most when a student has a specific gap, such as A-Maths that stopped making sense in Sec 3 or English essays stuck at the same band, and a tutor who teaches to the current syllabus with a plan. This guide answers the main questions families ask about the O-Levels: whether tuition is worth it, the move to the SEC exam from 2027, results, the timetable, each subject, and what comes after.

From 2027 the O-Level is replaced by the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC). Students in Sec 4 in 2026 are the last O-Level cohort; students in Sec 3 in 2026 sit the first SEC.

Is O-Level tuition worth it, and how do you choose?

It is worth it when there is a clear reason. The common ones are a subject that has fallen behind (A-Maths is the usual one), a student who understands lessons but loses marks on written answers, or a Sec 4 student who needs structured exam practice before the papers. It is probably not needed when a student is coping, keeps up with schoolwork and gets useful feedback from school.

If you do look for a tutor, four things matter more than the advert:

  1. The current syllabus. From 2027 the codes are new (for example K310 for E-Maths), so check that notes and practice papers match.
  2. A plan beyond this week’s homework, running to the exam.
  3. Written work that is marked, with specific feedback, not just answers.
  4. A format that suits the child: a small group for pace and practice, or one-to-one for a narrow gap.

Our guide on how to choose a reliable tutor compares the types of tutor.

What changes when the O-Level becomes the SEC?

MOE says students take the GCE O- and N-Level examinations until 2026. From 2027, SEAB combines the O-, N(A)- and N(T)-Levels into one exam, the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), in line with Full Subject-Based Banding. The SEC applies from the 2024 Secondary One cohort onwards.

The main changes:

  • Each subject is taken at G1, G2 or G3. G3 matches the O-Level and uses the same A1 to 9 grades.
  • Every subject has a new code: English K300 (was 1184), E-Maths K310 (was 4052), A-Maths K341 (was 4049), Physics K323 (was 6091).
  • English and Mother Tongue written papers move to September.
  • JC entry from 2028 uses an L1R4 gross score of 16 or below, all on G3 subjects. MOE counts the O-Level as equivalent to G3.

SEAB says there is no change in the overall standard of the examinations.

When are O-Level results released, and what next?

MOE’s tentative window for the 2026 O-Level results is Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 January 2027. MOE announces the exact date nearer the time.

On results day, school candidates collect their results at school and private candidates view theirs on SEAB’s Candidates Portal. That afternoon, MOE emails each student about Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) eligibility, with Form A for those who are eligible, and the JAE opens for applications to JC, Millennia Institute (MI), polytechnic and ITE. MOE lists 9am on Tuesday 2 February 2027 (tentative) for JAE posting results.

The 2026 cohort is the last to receive O-Level results and the last JC intake on L1R5.

When are the O-Level and SEC exams held?

For the 2026 O-Level, English was sat with the other written papers, from mid-October to mid-November, and Mother Tongue had a mid-year sitting.

From 2027, SEAB sets a new pattern for the SEC:

Exam component From 2027 (SEC)
Oral, listening and practical exams Before the written papers, as now
English and Mother Tongue written papers September, in one sitting
All other written papers One period from October to November
Results January of the following year

So a student will finish the English papers about a month before maths and science begin, and revision needs planning in two phases. SEAB has not yet published the exact 2027 dates.

O-Level maths: E-Maths and A-Maths

Most students take Mathematics (E-Maths) and many add Additional Mathematics (A-Maths). From 2027 they are SEC G3 Mathematics (K310) and G3 Additional Mathematics (K341).

E-Maths (K310) A-Maths (K341)
Papers 2 papers, 2 h 15 min each 2 papers, 2 h 15 min each
Formulae Some formulae provided in the exam Some formulae provided in the exam
Leads to Needed for almost every post-secondary route The usual base for H2 Mathematics in JC

A-Maths is where most O-Level students feel the jump: algebra has to be fluent before calculus and trigonometry make sense.

For classes, see our O-Level maths classes page.

O-Level English: syllabus, oral, Papers 1 and 2

SEC G3 English Language (K300) has four papers in SEAB’s 2027 syllabus:

Paper What it tests Time
Paper 1 Writing (70 marks) 1 h 50 min
Paper 2 Comprehension (50 marks) 1 h 50 min
Paper 3 Listening (30 marks) About 45 min
Paper 4 Oral Communication (30 marks) About 20 min, including 10 min preparation

The syllabus says the oral exam is delivered by computer. Papers 1 and 2 move to September from 2027, so English revision peaks in August rather than in October.

English improves slowly, which is why it rewards steady, marked practice over a last-minute push. For classes, see our O-Level English classes page.

O-Level science: pure or combined, practicals and Physics

Students take sciences either as pure subjects (Physics K323, Chemistry K324, Biology K325) or as a combined science. SEAB names the combined options by their parts: Science (Physics, Chemistry) K326, Science (Physics, Biology) K327 and Science (Chemistry, Biology) K328. The choice affects workload now and subject options in JC.

Practical skills are examined too. In G3 Physics (K323), for example, Paper 3 is a 1 h 50 min practical test worth 20% of the subject, sat before the written papers.

At Higher Nucleus we run O-Level Physics classes. We do not run O-Level Chemistry or Biology classes. Physics carries on as H2 Physics in JC.

After the O-Levels: JC, MI or polytechnic?

In the 2027 JAE, MOE’s main entry rules are:

  • JC: L1R5 gross score of 20 or below, plus subject grade requirements.
  • MI: L1R4 gross score of 20 or below.
  • Polytechnic: ELR2B2 net score of 26 or below for most courses, plus each course’s entry requirements.

Lower is better. For JC and MI, your gross score decides whether you qualify and your net score (after bonus points) decides where you are posted; for polytechnic, the net score is used for both. Our 2026 JC cut-off points page lists last year’s ranges as a reference.

For students heading to JC, JC1 moves quickly in the first term. Our Pre-JC Bridging Programme gives a head start.

O-Level or IGCSE?

Both are taken at about age 16, but they serve different students. The O-Level, and from 2027 the SEC, is Singapore’s national exam, jointly run by SEAB, MOE and Cambridge International Education, and is the qualification MOE uses for JC, MI and polytechnic admission. The IGCSE is Cambridge’s international qualification, usually taken at international schools before the IB Diploma or A-Levels. If you are weighing an international route, our IB or A-Levels guide compares the next stage.

Frequently asked questions

Is O-Level tuition necessary?

Not for every student. Tuition helps when there is a specific gap, such as A-Maths that has fallen behind, English writing stuck at the same band, or a need for structured exam practice in Sec 4. A student who is coping and gets useful feedback from school may not need it. If you are unsure, start with the subject that is weakest and review after one term.

When should my child start O-Level tuition?

Earlier is easier, because most O-Level subjects build on Sec 3 foundations. Sec 3 is a natural start for A-Maths and the sciences, when the new content begins. Starting in Sec 4 can still work for exam technique and practice, but there is less time to fix a weak topic. From 2027, English papers in September also bring the English deadline forward.

Is 2026 the last year of the O-Levels?

Yes. MOE says students take the GCE O-Level until 2026. From 2027, the O-, N(A)- and N(T)-Levels are combined into the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), for school and private candidates. G3 subjects in the SEC match the O-Level standard and use the same A1 to 9 grades.

Which O-Level subject do students find hardest?

It varies, but A-Maths is the subject families ask about most, because it moves quickly from algebra into calculus and trigonometry, and weak algebra shows up everywhere. English is the slowest to improve, and Physics asks students to apply ideas to unfamiliar situations. The best starting point is your child’s own test scripts.

Is there O-Level tuition in Bishan or Bukit Timah?

Yes. We run O-Level classes at our Bishan centre, near Bishan MRT, and our Bukit Timah centre, near Beauty World MRT, and every class can also be joined live on Zoom. The O-Level class schedules page shows which class runs where, with current days and times.

Do you teach O-Level Chemistry and Biology?

No. Our O-Level science classes are in Physics only. We run O-Level classes in A/E Maths, Lower Secondary Maths, English and Physics. At JC level we do teach H2 Chemistry and H2 Biology.

Does the SEC change what my child needs for JC?

Only from 2028. Students who sit the O-Level in 2026 apply in the 2027 JAE with an L1R5 gross score of 20 or below. From the 2028 exercise, MOE’s JC rule is an L1R4 gross score of 16 or below, with every subject in the score at G3. MOE counts the O-Level as equivalent to G3.
